I bent one of these Spindles, an 8 mm thread, and it is some type of ceramic or cast pot metal that is plated with the finish. When you try to bend it back, snap, no memory in the material. New one was expensive, but finding it was like hen's teeth. CFS was able to get it for me: an exact replacement.
